COLLOIDAL SILICA | Colloidal Silica Suspension %30

    CAS: 7631-86-9

    What is Colloidal Silica?

Colloidal Silica (also known as silica sol) is a stable dispersion of highly pure, amorphous silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanoparticles suspended in a liquid medium—most commonly water. Unlike standard silica powders that settle over time, the microscopic silica particles in a colloidal suspension are electrostatically stabilized. This means they repel each other, remaining evenly distributed and indefinitely suspended without the need for constant agitation.

Renowned for its versatility, high binding strength, and environmentally friendly, water-based nature, colloidal silica has become an indispensable raw material across dozens of high-tech and heavy industries. From precision investment casting to advanced electronics polishing, colloidal silica delivers unmatched performance.

Synonyms: Silicon(IV) oxide, Silicium dioxide, Silicium (IV) oxide

    Colloidal Silica 30% Suspension

While colloidal silica is available in various concentrations, the Colloidal Silica 30% Suspension is the globally recognized industry workhorse.

The “30%” refers to the mass fraction of solid silica nanoparticles within the liquid suspension. This specific concentration strikes the perfect balance for industrial applications: it provides an exceptionally high active silica content for robust binding and coating, while maintaining a low, water-like viscosity that makes it easy to pump, pour, mix, and spray.

Colloidal Silica Typical Physical & Chemical Properties of 30% Suspension:

    • Silica Content (SiO2): 30% (by weight)

    • Stabilizing Counter-Ion: Typically Sodium (Na+) or Ammonium (NH4+), depending on the required grade.

    • pH Level: Usually alkaline (8.5 – 10.5) to maintain electrostatic stability.

    • Particle Size: Ranges from 7 to 20 nanometers, offering maximum surface area for superior binding.

    • Specific Gravity / Density: ~1.19 to 1.22 g/cm³ at 25°C.

    • Viscosity: Less than 10 mPa·s (cps), ensuring excellent penetration into porous substrates.

    • Appearance: Slightly opalescent, milky, or clear liquid (depending on particle size).

Colloidal Silica Industrial Applications & Use Cases

The incredible surface area and reactivity of our Colloidal Silica 30% Suspension make it a critical component in the following sectors:

    1. Investment Casting (Precision Casting)

Colloidal silica is the primary binder used in the lost-wax investment casting process. It is used to create the ceramic shell molds for casting complex metal parts.

    • Benefit: It provides excellent high-temperature resistance, incredible shell strength, and a superior, smooth surface finish on the final cast metal, reducing the need for post-cast machining.

    2. Construction and Concrete Densification

When applied to concrete floors and structures, the nanosilica penetrates deep into the capillary pores of the concrete. It reacts with calcium hydroxide (free lime) to form calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) gel.

    • Benefit: This dramatically increases the surface hardness, abrasion resistance, and longevity of the concrete while significantly reducing dusting and water permeability.

    3. Coatings, Paints, and Surface Treatments

Incorporating 30% colloidal silica suspension into architectural paints, industrial coatings, and wood finishes transforms the physical properties of the film.

    • Benefit: It improves scratch resistance, acts as a brilliant anti-blocking agent, and provides anti-soiling properties, keeping surfaces cleaner for longer.

    4. Refractories and High-Temperature Insulation

In the manufacturing of refractory bricks, castables, and vacuum-formed ceramic fiber shapes, colloidal silica acts as a high-temperature inorganic binder.

    • Benefit: Unlike organic binders that burn off, silica creates a strong, ceramic bond that withstands extreme thermal shock and temperatures exceeding 1500°C.

    5. Paper, Cardboard, and Textile Industries

It is widely used as a frictionizing or anti-slip agent. When applied to recycled paper, corrugated cardboard boxes, or textile fibers, the silica nanoparticles create microscopic roughness.

    • Benefit: Prevents stacked boxes and pallets from slipping during transit, reducing product damage and improving warehouse safety.

    6. Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP)

In semiconductor manufacturing, highly purified grades of 30% colloidal silica are used in CMP slurries to polish silicon wafers and optical lenses.

    • Benefit: The perfectly spherical nanoparticles provide a controlled, scratch-free mechanical polish at the nanometer level.

Why Choose Colloidal Silica Over Traditional Binders?

    • Eco-Friendly and Non-Toxic: It is a 100% water-based, solvent-free inorganic material with zero Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), ensuring workplace safety and environmental compliance.

    • Superior Binding Strength: The ultra-fine particle size allows it to penetrate microscopic pores and establish incredibly strong siloxane bonds upon drying.

    • High-Temperature Stability: It does not degrade under heat, making it vastly superior to organic polymers and resins for extreme-heat applications.

    • Cost-Effective Efficiency: Because of the high surface area of the nanoparticles, even small dosages yield massive improvements in material performance.

Storage, Handling, and Shelf Life Guidelines

To ensure the maximum efficacy and stability of your Colloidal Silica 30% Suspension, proper storage protocols are mandatory:

    1. Protect from Freezing (CRITICAL): Colloidal silica must never be allowed to freeze. Freezing breaks the electrostatic stability, causing the silica to permanently precipitate and gel. Once frozen, the product is ruined and cannot be reconstituted. Store between 5°C and 35°C (41°F – 95°F).

    2. Keep Containers Sealed: Prolonged exposure to air can cause water evaporation, leading to irreversible crusting and gelation around the container edges.

    3. Avoid Contamination: Introducing acids, multivalent metal ions, or other electrolytes will alter the pH and instantly drop the silica out of suspension, turning the liquid into a solid gel.

    4. Shelf Life: When stored correctly in unopened containers, our Colloidal Silica 30% Suspension boasts an impressive shelf life of up to 12 to 24 months.
